The Funhub Aquila 48 Eco Catamaran is the most environmentally responsible sailing yacht in the Funhub range — a sailing catamaran that has eliminated diesel propulsion entirely by combining a generous sail plan for primary propulsion with an 80kWh lithium iron phosphate battery bank charged exclusively by a 16kW roof-integrated flexible solar array, providing zero-emission auxiliary propulsion for marina maneuvering, calm water motoring, and charging systems at anchor without ever burning fuel. The catamaran hull form is particularly well-suited to solar-electric auxiliary propulsion because the wide beam — 7.8 meters — supports a solar array area that would be impossible on a monohull, and the inherent stability of the twin-hull design means that the solar panels can be mounted flat on the hardtop and coach roof without being shaded by the mast or heeled out of optimal sun angle during sailing. The twin 40kW electric motors — one in each hull — provide thrust equivalent to a 60hp diesel in terms of practical harbor maneuvering and calm-water motoring at 7 knots, with a range of 80nm on electric power alone that covers virtually all the harbor approach, departure, and marina maneuvering that constitutes the bulk of auxiliary engine use. The sailing rig — 120-square-meter main and 65-square-meter furling headsail on an unstayed carbon mast — provides the primary propulsion for the 8,500 kg catamaran, achieving a consistent 8 to 10 knots in 12 knots of true wind.
